Sir John Vickers

We are honoured to welcome Professor Sir John Vickers, Warden of All Souls College, Oxford, as our distinguished guest speaker. John has held this prestigious role since 2008, following a remarkable career in academia, public service, and economics.

After studying Philosophy, Politics, and Economics (PPE) at Oxford, and a period in the oil industry, John returned to academia, serving as Drummond Professor of Political Economy from 1991 to 2008. His contributions to economics extend beyond academia—he was Chief Economist at the Bank of England and a member of the Monetary Policy Committee (1998-2000), as well as Director General and Chairman of the Office of Fair Trading (2000-2005). John has held prominent positions, including President of the Royal Economic Society (2007-2010) and President of the European Association for Research in Industrial Economics (2018-2020). He also chaired the Independent Commission on Banking (2010-2011).

Renowned for his research that bridges economic theory and policy, his work focuses primarily on competition and regulation. We are privileged to have him deliver a keynote lecture on “Reflections on Inflation and the Monetary Policy Committee” at our 25th anniversary celebration of the Department of Economics.

25 years of the department of economics

In 2024 celebrated the 25th anniversary of Oxford’s Department of Economics. Since its founding in 1999, the department has become one of Europe’s leading academic hubs for economics. As part of this vibrant community, OUBEP is proud to contribute to its legacy by connecting economic theory with real-world business practice. Our programme and annual alumni events reflect the department’s commitment to fostering lasting relationships and advancing the study of economics in both academic and professional spheres.

our annual alumni celebration

As part of our growing OUBEP alumni community, we understand the importance of fostering connections and sharing insights.

In 2023 the 2nd annual alumni event brought together graduates for an evening of networking, highlighted by a compelling keynote from Beata Javorcik, Chief Economist at the EBRD, on “Globalisation in Turbulent Times.”

In 2024 we celebrated both the 3rd annual alumni event and the 25th anniversary of the Department of Economics.

the yearbook

In celebration of 70 years of OUBEP, we created a special yearbook reflecting on the programme’s rich history and alumni achievements. This year, we are excited to share the yearbook as part of our alumni event, with copies available at the venue. The online version, now updated to include the 2023 and 2024 cohorts, is available for download on the alumni page. It’s a wonderful way to connect with fellow alumni and celebrate our shared journey as we continue to build the OUBEP community.

the history

The history of OUBEP is in many ways the history of changing social attitudes towards business in Britain over the past 71 years.

OUBEP was founded by a group of business leaders during the period following the Second World War – a time of immense political, economic and societal change – “…to bring the ‘leaders of tomorrow’ from the public and private sectors together, to better understand modern economic thinking, and therefore the bigger picture in which they would one day operate.”

Over time, OUBEP has evolved and adapted to meet the requirements of the modern world. However, to this day it maintains its foundational intent to bring together a gathering of bright minds to better understand and discuss the impact of the global economy, and to ultimately benefit business and society.
