Lecture SeriesECON 101 - Data Economy

February to July 2022

Department of Economics

2022 marks the 101 anniversary of teaching economics at the University of Oxford.

As part of our celebration, OUBEP and the Department of Economics ran an “Econ101” lecture series on the “Data Economy”. This topic poses a range of complex economic and regulatory challenges. Through this series, we informed audiences about the economics of the data economy.

First, we looked at who should own and have access to personal data and we should address the paradox that people often claim to care about their personal data but act in ways that suggests that they put a very low value on it. We then considered how price discrimination and competition interact in the world of data-driven algorithmic pricing, should regulators continue to evaluate markets simply on the basis of low prices for consumers? Finally, we analysed what risks and opportunities cryptocurrencies and other forms of decentralized finance can offer to firms and consumers around the world.
